Sweet Blackberry Days of Summer

The time is here! Blackberries are ripe and we picked a bucket full for jelly making. My dad has an area down by his creek that is full of blackberries. He even trimmed up the bushes to make the picking easier.

I had a helper who wasn’t afraid to get stuck with the thorns and that made it go really fast. My arms are scratched up from leaning over into the patch but that is where all the really juicy ones are, of course.

We brought our berries home and made six pints of jelly and now they are sitting on my shelf just waiting for some homemade biscuits. I love opening a jar in the middle of winter and remembering the sweet blackberry days of summer.

Next up in the canning department…plum jam! It will be here pretty soon.

  1. Isn’t that funny — your blackberries are later than ours. We LOVE them, and picked plenty this year. No jams, but LOTS of cobblers.

    Enjoy.

  2. Yum! You’ve inspired me to make Blackberry muffins. I think I will have to cut them in half or so. My kids are obsessed with these! Yesterday morning my 2 year old had to have them with his breakfast!

  3. Although I’m not a fan of blackberries they look luscious. We just don’t grow them here in ND. We have been eating some wonderful raspberries and I have lots of freezer jam made!

  4. Mmmmmmmmm- they look delicious! I planted some raspberries just this year (I dont know about growing blackberries in Australia?). But those sure look delicious! I am hoping the raspberries grow!

  5. someone recently gave me a tip for picking berries from the center of the bush – use a stick with a little hook at one end to pull the branches closer to you. you will not have to reach inside with all the thorns.

  6. Is he picking blackberries in white clothing?! hahaah! That is a recipe for disaster in our house! Of course, with boiling water we do not need fear! 🙂
I LOVE and miss blackberries and raspberries!! There are no such things here in Peru.
Thanks for all your beautiful posts!

  7. MomtoCherubs-Ours are very late this year for some reason. They are just now getting started and we are usually done in July.

Amy-Those are his “old” clothes. I told him to dress in something that could get dirty and that is what he picked out. He has lots of hand-me-downs from older brothers and what he is wearing are things he doesn’t like….he is not a stripes guy for some reason. Boys…gotta love em.
