The end of the month of March has arrived! Spring has burst out all over the place here in my part of California. I hope you have started to see the greening of the grass, the colorful display of flowers, and bright blue skies in your area. For our friends in the Southern Hemisphere, you are beginning to feel the change of season in a different way, still beautiful!

Outdoor Hour Challenge Blog Carnival – December Edition

Well, another year has passed and we sit on the brink of a new year. What nature study memories have you created with your family? Our family had a great year of outdoor adventures both together and as individuals. I started off my year in Florida and ended it with a trip to Oregon last week. It doesn’t get much better than that. 

I appreciate all the entries to the carnival this month…such diverse and interesting posts to enjoy. I look forward to another year with all my nature-loving families. 

I also wanted to thank all the contributors to the Handbook of Nature Study Newsletters this year. Our community has grown into such a wonderful group of families. I feel very blessed.

Outdoor Hour Challenge Blog Carnival – September Fall Fun Edition

The change of the season always renews my nature study spirit! With the cooler air and still abundant sunshine, our family has taken back the evening hours for hikes in the woods and at the river. The sunset is coming  a few minutes earlier each week so we are not getting in a long walk but there is still time to end our day with some fresh air and some exploring. I know that will end soon so I am savoring each walk.

This marks the last of the year as far as rotating through the nature study topics here on the Outdoor Hour Challenge. The night sky has been a thought-provoking study here in our home and one that is always enjoyed by lounging out on the deck after dark and just gazing up to notice the things going on up there at night. Shirley Ann from Under An English Sky has submitted their OHC Butterflies entry. She says,”There is just no way that we could not spend a little time learning about and appreciating these insects.” I totally agree! She shares some amazing images and then their journal entries. Be inspired!

Rebecca from Down a Rabbit Trail shares her first entry with the carnival: Tadpole Hunger Games. She says, “We just put in our own little backyard tadpole pond this past month and have been very surprised by all the life that’s finding it way there.” Enjoy.

Claire from Angelic Scalliwags gives us an update on her One Year Pond Study: Week 23 had some new visitors to the pond and Week 25 is all about the Atmospheric Changes at the pond. These are some of the best nature study examples I have seen in awhile…each child experiencing the pond in their own way.

Eva Varga has submitted their South Slough Estuary entry to the carnival. She told me about this place years ago and I took my boys there to learn more about this interesting habitat. Read her entry for my information.  She also would love for you to read her entry: National Moth Week-Our First Experience where she tells about their try at participating in this Citizen Science project.

Outdoor Hour Challenge Blog Carnival – Fishy Version

This was probably the hardest month of nature study for our family……the topic, a busy life, and HOT weather really did keep us from tackling the fish theme with our usual vigor. But, that is what is wonderful about nature study – we can always pick it up again when the opportunity arises. Thank you so much for all of your entries this month to the blog carnival. I think each entry is a special glimpse into how your family kept nature study at the forefront and I know they will inspire us all to get outside with our children.

Eva’s daughter had the opportunity to attend Fish Camp this year and what a wonderful experience for her! This is a great entry showing how a child’s passion can be nurtured.

Potpourri
Claire submits their Year Long Pond Study – Night Visit for this edition of the carnival. Her images and the progression of their on-going pond study are inspiring.

Eva submits her Surprise Cross Pollination Experiment entry for you to read. They had some petunias accidentally cross pollinate and you can see the results in her entry. This would be a great garden flower nature study activity.

Eva also has written up their Butterfly Bonanza – Lessons in Butterfly Identification, showing their outing with local naturalists to net and then identify butterflies. Great entry!
