More Bees than Usual?

lupines clover and a bee

Has anyone else noticed that there are a lot of bees this year? It seems to me that our garden is just alive with bees and perhaps we have added enough flowering plants to attract more bees or there really are more bees like I am imagining.

In our hiking around the countryside, I have noticed more wildflowers this year as well. The clover is everywhere and perhaps with the abundance of flowers, there is a relationship with the number of bees.

Always more questions to answer….

  1. That’s good news! I myself have not seen any bees yet this year. We did however, see yesterday the largest yellow jacket we’ve ever seen! He was in our car too, while we were driving to the grocery store. Yikes!

  2. Interesting, since there has been coverage over the last couple years of collapse of wild bee colonies (not to mention the invasion of colonies by mites).

  3. Exactly what we have been talking about here in our world….has the population recovered?

  4. My husband is a beekeeper and the thing we have noticed in the last couple of years is an increase in people becoming beekeepers. Our state meetings used to have about 200 now they have about 400-500. So maybe there is a new beekeeper nearby and you are seeing their bees.

  5. We saw a swarm of bees yesterday….amazing to see.

I talked to a friend of our that is a professional beekeeper and he said that there is still a rise in the disappearing bees here in California. He also talked about colony collapse disorder (CCD) and it was fascinating to here from someone who works with bees everyday about the ins and outs of keeping bees and what CCD means in our everyday lives. I want to learn more and he promised that he would make time to talk to me and the boys more over the summer and he invited us out to see his hives.

I know there is more to this story.
