Outdoor Hour Challenge-Signs of Spring Bonus Challenge

This is a simple one:

Make sure to mention to your children that Saturday, March 20th is the first day of spring. Take your Outdoor Hour time this week to look for signs of spring in your backyard or neighborhood.

For many of us, this past week has brought warmer temperatures and with the time change, more light in the evenings. This is an exciting time of year for all of us as we anticipate the many changes the new season will bring.

Some signs to look for:

  • Green grass
  • Wildflowers-dandelions
  • Spring bulbs like tulips, crocus, and jonquils
  • Birds, perhaps nesting already
  • Warmer temperatures
  • Blooming trees
  • Insects

You can use the notebook page below to record your signs of spring or you can use your own nature journal.

  1. Mornin’ Barb! Oh how I wished you were with us on our walk yesterday. I see your walks posted and wish we had such a great place to stroll, so I took the camera to record what we see when we stroll, from the challenges point of view, I will NEVER feel sorry for myself again!!! Thanks for opening my eyes!

  2. Thanks for this freebie nature page…it is lovely! I think we will head out today and use it! I will post back on my blog with our findings and link up here too. 🙂 THANK YOU!

  3. I think you’re depressing me. Is 4-5 inches of snow a sign of spring? Argh. We actually did go out yesterday (when it was 65 degrees) and look for signs of spring – very few and very hard to find. But today? No chance – blowing snow means it is COLD.

Love your blog. Thanks for encouraging me to get outside with my kiddos more than we already do AND to make it purposeful.

  4. Yay! Been stalkin’ your site waiting for new book :o)

I was trying to find something to do today to keep grandbaby entertained (babysitting) and going out for a Signs of Spring walk would be great!

  5. I had to laugh yesterday. The news reports here in Japan are giving forecasts for which day will bring the first cherry blossoms. Tokyo is expected on March 21st, with more northernly areas a few days after.
I saw my first cherry blossoms on Thursday on two trees that are more sheltered than most of the others. Soon it will be a sea of pink popcorn fluffiness.

  6. What a bonus your bonus challenge was for us! Thank you and Happy Spring!

  7. Sharing twice, hope that’s ok. The boys went crazy over the Dandelion crop in our side yard, MORE than I went crazy over wild Daffodils. Weird. 🙂

  8. Always a pleasure to join in 🙂 Thanks for your posts!

  9. We enjoyed this challenge, as we’re starting to see more signs of spring here in Minnesota. Thank you for the nice journaling page to go with the challenge. My boys had fun filling it out after our adventure today 🙂

  10. Thanks for the lovely notebook page! My children enjoyed this, even the 4 year old (I am shocked!). My 8 year old is very excited to start the Spring Nature Study this week.

  11. Spring comes late to Wyoming, but we still had fun with this one! Thanks so much for hosting, Barb!

  12. We had the worst winter in my entire life of living in the Mid-Atlantic, so we were really ready to focus on the gifts of spring.
Check out Mei’s notebook page at our site. And this by a reluctant sketcher!
    Thanks for the ideas, Barb!

  13. This blog is lovely! This is exactly the type of real science education I want to provide for my daughters. Thank you.

  14. These are lovely resources for science notebooking. Thank you for sharing them.

It is definitely spring here in Texas, so we will take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy these studies!

  15. I was a little late in finding the Signs of Spring entries, but I added mine anyway. This site has been helpful for getting my toddler and preschooler outside to notice things. We normally wouldn’t be so observant! It’s getting hot here in the desert already (in the 90s this week) so we have to have SHORT nature study! We’ll participate in the weather study next. Blessings!

  16. Despite having snow on the ground during the first twelve days of spring, there are some signs that spring has arrived! Here’s what we found:
