I think we have all read in the Handbook of Nature Study that the dandelion can grow to be two feet or more in height. I had never seen a dandelion that tall but I took her word for it (page 532 in the HNS in the dandelion section).
Today, I saw a dandelion that was more than two feet tall! The photo above show the plant we found alongside our walking trail. I am holding the stem up with the blossom on top…..Kona wanted to be in the photo too. Yes, it was cold enough for a flannel shirt and it did sprinkle on us as we walked. I had on my new Keens though….Keen Newport Sandal (gargoyle and sap green).
Here are the blossoms up close.
I took a photo of the leaves at the base so you can see that it is indeed a dandelion.
The purple vetch is really taking over the sides of the trail…my favorite color so beautiful and happy.
It makes me happy anyway. The bees were loving it too.
So there you have it….two foot high dandelions!
That is neat. I’ve never come across a dandelion that has grown that tall. Generally where we are the are cut Long before they reach that height!
I love the way you dig into this handbook. I have used it too sparingly and plan on making it very thread bare this year as we do our nature and botany studies. Thank you! There are really some interesting and profound things in that big ‘guide’ book.
Pam,
My copy of the HNS is in deplorable condition. The binding is split and it is barely hanging on together at this point. I have highlighted, underlined, and made notes throughout the book. The table of contents is a mess with all my check marks and highlights.
I still love it though and it is a treasure.
I was surprised to find a dandelion blossom in the top of our milkweed bush – it had grown right through the middle of it and was close to 2 feet tall. That’s one way to escape the mower, I guess. Love those purple flowers on your trail.
Wow! Now that is amazing! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
No kidding?! I never knew that! LOL Thanks for sharing!
That’s very interesting. I never thought they could actually grow that tall and now I really want to find one like that. On the trails near my house, we have those purple flowers too.
Love your Keens!
And I remember learning that about dandelions when we studied them a couple of years ago! We have plenty in our yard as specimens. 😉
That’s incredible! The tallest dandelion we saw when we did the nature study was about a foot tall. The girls put two rulers together to get an idea what the dandelion would like if it grew that large. We were all in awe that they could grow that tall. How exciting to actually see them growing that tall on your walk!!
I have lots do regular dandelion plants in my yard, and I also have a plant that looks like a 2-3foot tall dandelion! It has a wide hollow stem with leaves growing up its length. – can we eat it???
I don’t have knowledge to give you any guidance. Ask at your local garden center.
