As we start another year of nature study together, I want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to see the year’s plans all in one place. This plan was made with Handbook of Nature Study members in mind but it will also be very accessible to non-members who would like to join us.

Get the Year Plan in a PDF: Subscribe to the Ultimate Naturalist Library, Journey, or Discovery level membership: This membership will give you access to a detailed schedule for the entire year. You’ll have a printable plan that shows dates and specific topics that will be considered every Friday. This makes your planning super easy!
Download the Ebooks: Ultimate Naturalist Members will have access to the three ebooks needed for the year’s nature study plans.

Note: There is no separate ebook for the autumn season. We’ll be using the free notebook page bundle from 2009 that is available to everyone under the Autumn tab on the blog.

This 78 page bundle can be printed for each student in your family. The Parent’s edition of the Notebook Page Bundle includes an index of challenges AND chart that shows the nature topics and corresponding pages in the Handbook of Nature Study by Anna Botsford Comstock.
I’m super excited about this new Notebook Page Bundle! This has been a much requested item and I’m happy to make this a part of the Ultimate and Journey level memberships. Note: These are not new notebook pages, but for convenience they’re the pages from the ebooks gathered into one file for you to print and use with your family. - Subscribe to the Handbook of Nature Study blog for reminders each Friday.

My favorite season is spring and seeing all the new growth.
My favorite season to study nature is Fall. I love the change in weather, the leaves, and in the animals.
My favorite season is fall because of the nice cool weather and all the colors of the leaves.
My favorite season is Fall. I love the color changes on the trees, cooler temperatures and hiking.
Spring is my favorite, as everything wakes from its slumber. The world is newly refreshed and ready to burst forth with new life.

I love the changing of everything in the fall, but spring is so wonderful because of all the new growth, and then there is summer when things are in full bloom. Not much of a fan of old man winter tho. 😉

Oh and it’s really hard to pick, but for this moment, I’d say Spring!
My favorite season for nature study is spring with all the new growth and gardening, but fall colors, summer beaches, and snow are fun too!
My favorite season is fall. It’s very hot in my area and Noone wants to go outside in the summer. But in the fall a it’s perfect.
My favorite season is winter. I like the challenge to get outside and be flexible with the weather. I like bringing warm drinks and blankets along. I like being able to explore the areas we can’t when life is booming with growth and activity; it’s like backstage pass time.

My favorite season is Fall. I even got married in Fall. The weather is perfect and the wonderful colors that have been hiding all year finally come out. Lots of animals so see and so many wonderful fruits and veggies ready to be eaten from the garden!

I don’t really have a favorite season, I’m happy anytime it’s under 70°.
I love the mixed up seasons – the space in between two seasons, when the world isn’t ready to give up where it is but is also looking forward to the next one.
My favorite time for nature study is autumn. We are starting a fresh school year, and the world around us is changing so quickly. The colors are vibrant, and when the air gets that first crispness to it that requires wearing a sweater for your nature walk and a cup of something warm when you get inside, it’s just almost too much!
I love each season for different reasons. I am so looking forward to joining in the nature study series this year!

My favorite season is spring; there’s nothing like watching all the new growth coming up…the new babies coming into the world. Making those discoveries with my child makes for so many great memories.
What age range are these targeted to? Do they work well with older kids (middle school and high school ages) as well as younger?
Most of the challenges are written for a wide range of ages in mind. My kids used them even through high school and the last two series of books have “advanced” options to take the challenge further. Please look at the samples for the ebooks you are interested in using and see if they will work with your family. Thanks for asking!
